April 8, 2011 – They don’t make them like they used to
Everyone loves a good Disney movie, but they just don’t make them like they used to! This video takes you back 75 years to educate you on the process of making an animated cartoon. Disney’s Snow White “was the first full-length cel-animated feature in motion picture history, as well as the first animated feature film produced in America, the first produced in full color, the first to be produced by Walt Disney, and the first in the Walt Disney Animated Classics canon”, according to Wikipedia. Disney staff created over 3 million drawings and paintings to make this film. It was well worth the work as it broke every box office record at it’s opening theater. What I find very unique about the old Disney cartoons are the watercolor backgrounds, you just don’t see that type of painterly quality in any other cartoon! Now, I understand that technological advances have changed the way movies, particularly animated cartoons, are made. But is it really for the better? Yes, it may be more cost effective and less time consuming but does the quality suffer? Don’t get me wrong, I love Disney cartoons, but if you have some extra time watch a few movies like Snow White, created 1937, then Jungle Book, created 1967, then Aladdin, created 1992 and see if you can track the differences in the films. You may be surprised by what you find.
